As President Bruce Jellard was absent Vice President Risto Poskiparta took the chair. He opened the meeting welcoming the guests speakers and thanked the members present for their attendance.

He touched briefly on the the Rotary Golf Tournament and on Rotaract where a budget for attending seminars must be decided soon.

He then asked the board and floor to present or raise points of common interest.

Jeff Mc Gill and Brent Palfryman

Dave Lance
He attended the launching of the Mercedes Smart Car at the Bale where Rotaract sold Raffle tickets for IDR 8.000.000,-. Still he is of the oppinion that some of the Rotaracter could need some training to improve their selling skills.

He continued by presenting the ideas for service projects submitted by members in response to his challenge:

VOCATIONAL
1. Develop an on-going support for the ROLE Foundation. They are now at a stage where a little moral help, awareness and fund raising would allow them to progress steadily over the long term.

DIRECT HELP TO PEOPLE IN NEED
2. Providing help to needy leprosy victims who cannot who struggle with the basic needs of life. Support could be provided by regularly providing “goody bags” that would make life more bearable for them.

3. Support for the “Bali Life Centre”. This is an orphanage near Karma Kandara that has been well established and is now constructing a new center. Perhaps we can support the construction effort and gain recognition at the same time.

PUBLIC HEALTH
4. Is there a way we can help the fight against the spread of rabies in Bali. This has reached an epidemic and government funding does not appear to be enough.

ENVIRONMENTAL
5. Plastic free supermarkets. We could target Hardy’s in a campaign to eliminate the use of plastic bags to be replaced with bio-degrable paper bags.

6. The singing garbage truck. A garbage truck plies the streets of NUSA DUA neighbourhood. The truck sounds a melody which people will soon learn to associate with the approaching of the garbage truck. The truck will come every day. The melody will prompt people to appear in front of their houses with a container or a bag filled with their garbage collected over the last 24 hours. The collection of the rubbish is free of charge for the people. When the truck is full the garbage is brought to the nearest official rubbish dump. Soon NUSA DUA will be largely free of rubbish and the illegal dump sites will disappear. We could provide a fund that would pay for the operational costs.

7. Promote publicity about caring for the environment. Hire someone to create a forum to provide education and information on a continuous basis, i.e. pay someone to write a weekly newspaper column in Bahasa Indonesia about environmental issues for the Bali Post. Perhaps such articles would be developed with a reputable environmental organisation i.e. GUS or other for validity and veracity. Articles could have puzzles or quizzes with answers appearing the next week and so on.

As well the information could be used on our Club website and depending on the scope of the position and funds available such an individual could be charged with maintaining the website and certain Club communications. This also would go part way towards the public relations effort you addressed during a recent meeting.

8. Support a “reduce, reuse, recycle” program aimed at school children. Create a simple training session in Bahasa that can be delivered to schools in assemblies or class rooms. Culminate with a competition ( poster or best idea ) – entry open to all schools we have run the program at. This could become an annual event.

Work with rotaract to deliver (Possible train the trainer work shop for rotaract members who will participate in delivery). Once developed this project could be run by the rotaract, under minimal Rotary supervision.

Dave Lance invited all members to comment and/or vote on above ideas prior to the next community service meeting.
