ANNOUNCEMENTS, REPORTS
President Bruce Jellard
President Bruce Jellard welcomed the members and the guest speaker.
The President then asked the floor to present or raise points of common interest.

Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
The District encourages the incoming officers for the RY 2011-2012 to attend the District Assembly to be held in conjunction with the District Conference on 10-11 June.

Ari Murti
The Department of Health will will hold a ceremony at Puskesmas Kuta for launching of the midwife training program. The President agreed to represent the Club at this event.

PP W. Nieman
After he will be less busy with the tennis tournament he will resume adminstration of the official Rotary Bali Nusa Dua web site.

Risto Poskiparta
He had distributed the roster for tennis volunteers by email. The response was limited. The roster was circulated again. Volunteers especially for the Nikko are still needed.

Gary Phair
The Tennis Committee has been in session again prior to the luncheon meeting:

  • The registration for the tournament is to close by 2 May.
  • The first phase of the internet auction has been concluded reaping in more than USD 1.000,- .
  • On Sunday, 1 May the tennis clinic for orphan children will be held.
  • The draw for the tournament shall be on 5 May at the Westin.

PP Michael Burchett
He briefly he introduced Matt Thorpe who is the CEO of the Annika Linden Foundation. The Bali Hotel Organization (BHA) runs a scholarship program which is supported by the Annika Linden Foundation.

PP Jo Rosarius
There were no cleft lip operations last week.

Matt Thorpe
He is from the UK. He lives currently in Sydney but spents about one week per month in Bali. Since January 2011 he is in charge of the Annika Linden Foundation (ALF).

Annika Linden was a young woman, who died in the Bali bombing on 12 October, 2002.

The ALF was established by her fiancé Mark Weingard as a tribute to her live in the belief that positive action is the only way to counter the negative impact of this tragedy.

The ALF is committed to supporting community-based health and education projects that promote the long-term self-empowerment of the disadvantaged.

Guiding Principles

  • Projects should have long-term objectives, usually 5 years.
  • Projects should target specific outcomes and aim to impact to as many lives as possible
  • Funding preference will be given to projects that receive minimal or no support from other sources
  • Projects should aim to empower individuals to achieve their highest potential
  • ALF is a non-political, non-religious organization

ALF IN BALI

The ALF partners with and supports 16 charity organizations in Bali including:

  • BHA scholarship program
  • Yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi (YKIP) (Health and Education) YAKKUM
  • YAKEBA
  • YRS
  • KEMBALI
  • BALIHEARS (Children’s Hearing Project)

ALF’s support per project is typically in the range of USD 20.000-30.000.
Currently ALF has two of its own personnel based in Bali. A centre is under construction to accomodate several NGO/charity organizations aiming to create synergy effects and to centralize administration and accounting.

ALF is also active in several other countries like Thailand, India and Brazil.

He proposed to envolve ALF in the identification of children with cleft lip and palate for operation under the clubs project.

The President and the members thanked Matt Thorpe for his interesting presentation.

Raffle
Tickets for IDR 385.000,- were sold. A Bottle of red wine was won by Bipan Kapur who donated it back as Raffles prize. Past winners owing prizes are reminded not to forget to make their contributions at the forthcoming meetings.
