ANNOUNCEMENTS, REPORTS
Vice President Risto
Vice President Risto called the members, visitors and guests to order at 01.00PM. He welcomed visiting Rotarians, members and their guests.
VP Risto extended a special welcome to Tressabel who he thought was more a member-elect rather than a guest. Tressabel was to be inducted today but, due to a small snafu in preparing her badge and Pres. Dave’s absence, this welcome event will be postponed until next week’s lunch meeting.
VP Risto reported that the truck for the ROLE Project has now been painted and with its new livery is ìready to rock and rollî.
VP Risto then sent the microphone around the table for any updates, news and interesting asides.
Ari Murti
Ari advised that she had visited Udayana University to attend a seminar conducted by a famous writer from the USA on the topics of HIV and prostitution as it relates to health and welfare issues.
Ari noted an interesting point to come from the seminar was that a program had been rolled out in China whereby kids with HIV were eligible for free education and that this resulted in a huge increase in their numbers attending school. Ari contrasted that enlightened approach to attitudes in Indonesia and lamented that kids here were often discouraged or rejected by schools due to their condition.
Guest Rtn. John Simpson
Guest Rtn. John Simpson (photo above) advised that he was President-Elect of Rotary Southern Districts and brought greetings from his club. John mentioned the successful matching grant program of $15,000,- with our club and that he would also have talks with Ari after the lunch regarding opportunities for inter-club support of our HIV Programs.
Tressabel
Tressabel advised that she is looking forward to being accepted as a new member of our club and this feeling was reciprocated by all present.
Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
Karl-Heinz Schmelzer as Community Service Chair advised that he, accompanied by Ari, had handed over Rp 14,450,000,- to support the mid-wives training program which will be held 27 to 28 October with an anticipated attendance of 30.
Karl also reported that support totalling US$ 1,500,- had been handed over to Kerta Praja Foundation for medical supplies to the clinic.
Karl-Heinz Schmelzer also advised that he had visited Puskesmas Nusa Dua during the week to hand over funds for malnutrition relief in accordance with our ongoing commitment to that program.
PP Bruce Jellard
PP Bruce advised that the standard 18 hole configuration of golf courses as designated by the R&A was insufficient to meet the demands of the Golf Committee fund raising machine. PP Bruce advised that he had more sponsors than holes pointing to another successful Tournament.
PP Bruce referred to the efforts of Risto in arranging a meeting with Chrysler whereby for the first time a Chrysler motor vehicle will be parked at a selected par 3, hopefully out of firing range, as a hole-in-one prize during the tournament to be held on November 12 at Bali Golf & Country Club.
PP Bruce gave a special vote of thanks to The Bali Oil Classic organisers and participants who had actually donated Rp 85 million from their recent annual tournament held at The Bali Golf & Country Club and all present seconded that.
Gary Phair
Gary reported that the Bike A Fund held the previous Sunday was a great fun day out, very well organised by Rotary Seminyak and a very effective fundraiser. Gary thought that around Rp 10-12 mil might have been raised for our club and that all participantsí nether regions were on the mend.
Gary mentioned that with regard to the Rotaract Professional Development Seminar on 30 October we are one presenter short from Rotary and appealed for volunteers. Failing that Mike advised that The Conrad would provide a presenter. He once again urged all Rotarians to support the Joint Fellowship dinner with Rotaract on 10 November.
PP Edward Naus
PP Edward Naus brought greetings from Princess Beatrix and the Crowned Heads of Europe after an enjoyable motoring holiday thru Europe and expressed his joy to be back in Bali.
PP Michael Burchett
PP Michael advised that the Joint Fellowship dinner on 12 November would be held in the Spice Restaurant. PP Michael also hoped that Rotarians would enjoy the new menus.
Bipan Kapur
Bipan gave an interesting update on forthcoming events in Nusa Dua. The WTA event will be held at The Westin, unfortunately for the last time, from 3 to 6 November. Bipan also mentioned that the ASEAN Summit will be held 14 to 19 November at the Nusa Dua conference facility and that this would exacerbate traffic and security arrangements during that period.
SAA PP Martin Smyth
SAA Martin S, having just returned from an unexpected hospital stay in Bangkok, expressed his disappointment at not being able to complete the Bike A Fund the previous Sunday. He did mention however that he had raised sponsorship of approximately Rp 4 mil and would be appealing to his sponsorsí charitable sides.
PP Jo Rosarius
Treasurer PP Jo reported that there had been one (1) cleft lip operation for the week. He was also pleased to advise that the cost of the operation was Rp 3.393.000,- and that anticipated increase in operation costs was not as bad as had been feared, up approximately 25%. Jo was also happy to be making many payments including the ROLE car because that’s why we raise it.
The microphone completed its circuit finding its way back to VP Risto who wished all present a pleasant lunch.
Birthdays & Anniversaries
Edward Naus – 02 October
Dave Lance – 29 October
Raffle
Tickets for IDR 420.000,- were sold. The prize a bottle of Australia’s finest, was won by PP Bruce who will (somewhat ironically) put it to good use during the Rugby World Cup final on Sunday to hopefully toast an All Black victory over Le Bleu. Past winners owing prizes are reminded not to forget to make their contributions at the forthcoming meetings.
Fines
Fines of IDR 50.000,- were levied for all and sundry offenses by SAA Martin, the quantum of which indicates he is clearly playing himself back into form after his illness.
Notable fines were: for all those present that had not had pneumonia in the past week but that seemed to run out of puff. The late Nunie received some attention from the SAA as did a few serial talkers and an errant phonester during presentations.
