Visiting Rotarians and Rotaract Members
Michael Klein and Dr. Harald Vergossen both of RC Moenchengladbach

John Aubuchon, guest of Gary Phair

SAA Martin Smyth
SAA Martin Smyth arriving with ample time to spare this week rang the bell 1:00pm, calling Rotarians to order following 30 minutes of fellowship.

President Gary Phair
President Gary welcomed and introduced Rotarians Michael Klein and Dr. Harald Vergossen from Moenchengladbach, Germany and John Aubuchon, from Bali Soap and Director of RCBND’s 22nd Annual Charity Tennis Tournament.

President Gary continued by updating everyone first on Rotary International news and developments, and then on the status of next month’s tennis tournament.

  • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match two-to-one, up to US$35 million per year, every dollar Rotary commits to reduce the funding shortfall for polio eradication through 2018. Click here for more info.
  • District 3420 is holding a seminar, in English, aimed at new Rotarians this coming Saturday, 27 July, at the Harvestland Mercure Hotel on Jl. By Pass near Simpang Siur. Cost IDR 110,000.-
  • Fourteen ‘gentle’ Rotarians have now paid RI and District dues. Another gentle reminder will sent next week. Members are reminded that the club has already paid these dues on their behalf from general funds and is out of pocket until reimbursed.
  • A separate email about members making donations to The Rotary Foundation on-line through member access will be sent shortly.

Then Gary, to the amazement of those present, announced that he now has balls. Who knew otherwise…? After a perfunctory round of hearty congratulations Gary clarified this by stating that Wilson Sporting Goods has generously donated 500 Wilson Championship ExtraDuty tennis balls for use throughout this year’s charity tennis tournament. Not only will this be a boon to the players but after the tournament the balls will be sold to players raising additional funds for RCBND’s hare-lip and cleft palate program.

To contact and support the good folks at Planet Sports in Jakarta who have arranged this sponsorship as well as for more information on Wilson tennis equipment and accessories available in Indonesia please click here.

And more good news… Gary has also secured a sponsorship from Adidas to donate 50 high quality sport bags. Fwiw, last year Rotaract Club Bali Nusa Dua sold these bags on our behalf at the University and elsewhere raising money for both the cleft palate operation and Rotaract’s Hipp-Hipp Children, a program to help disadvantage children, who are sick, have a fun day out.

Gary noted that even though the tennis tournament doesn’t generate the amount of funds as the golf tournament, that public relations the club receives for the tennis tournament is, for the most part, all the public relations the club receives during the year. And with professional assistance of Joyce Nelwan, on loan from Mama’s Restaurant, the club is receiving even more this year. Tip of the hat to Rtn. Reinhold.

Gary gave a friendly reminder for members to check their email boxes for a fellowship night courtesy PP Michael who is inviting RCBND members to the newly open Konderatu Hotel in Jimbaran tomorrow night, 26 July, 7.00pm. That said, please RSVP Michael if you will be joining.

Gary wrapped up the announcements by mentioning that ADG Wayan will be visiting RCBND on 29 August.

President Gary then sent the microphone around the table.

PP & Treasurer Jo Rosarius
PP Jo advised that two of three cleft palate operations had been performed this week. A scheduled third operation was postponed because the child was sick with flu. This puts the total at 1,364 operations since 1994.

Susan Stein
New Generations Chair Susan reported that the Rotaract Club is currently working on a budget with one of fund raising activities being in support of the tennis tournament.

Susan also advised members that the Yale University Whiffenpoofs, one of the world’s premier all male a cappella choirs, would be performing next week Saturday at The Laguna and Sunday at St. Regis with part of the proceeds from the ticket sales going to Unicef. Susan said she has attended the Whiffenpoof’s performances the last two years and it is a delightful evening all around and highly recommended. Contact the respective hotels for details. Good singing, Good cause, Great idea. :-)

Visiting Rotarian Michael Klein
Rtn Michael Klein (above photo, left) visiting from Moenchengladbach Western Germany stated that he is a lawyer specializing in marital law, especially prenuptial agreements, and in the process raised an eyebrow or two.

Dr. Harald Vergossen
Rtn. Harald (above photo, right) also visiting from Moenchengladbach Western Germany told members he is a university professor lecturing on marketing. Dr. Harald then gave a brief overview of RC Moenchengladbach’s main activities that currently include organizing a Global Grant with a Dutch Rotary Club for a project to address and avoid violence in primary school children aged 6-9 years and also working with Rotarian doctors supporting hospitals and medical projects around Asia.

Axel Kneip
Axel reiterated the donations thus far confirmed from Germany and mentioned that they interested in a long term partnership. This was very well received by those present. Thanks Axel.

PP Bruce Jellard
BNGR will now reopen mid November (no year mentioned but presumably 2013…).

Tickets for IDR 270,000 were sold. President Gary supplied this week’s prizes with two RI caps (one hat, one visor). Guest John Aubuchon and Rtn. Axel were the winners. Past winners owing prizes are reminded not to forget to make their contributions at forthcoming meetings.

An uproarious few minutes ensued when SAA Martin needed to quickly backpedal on the rather bizarre notion of fining members for not wearing a particular brand of undergarment (yes, you read that right and no, the brand will not be mentioned except to say the logo is dot shaped). Note to Martin: thinking outside the box is fine, wandering off the reservation, not so much… ;-) In any event, when calm was restored, a fine of IDR 10,000 was collected for some innocuous offense.

President Gary thanked one and all for their attendance and making it a very enjoyable meeting before declaring the meeting closed at 2.00PM.
