Acting SAA Risto Poskiparta
Acting SAA Risto rang the bell and called the meeting to order at 1.00pm.

President Edward Naus
President Edward welcomed members and guests, against a fairly loud backdrop of music from a golf lunch in the adjoining function room.

A special welcome was extended to Hazel Seow, Fund Development Specialist East Asia, resident in Singapore but reporting to RI in Evanston, Illinois, and the accompanying senior District Rotarians. A special welcome was also extended to visiting Rotarians from Milano, Italy, from Singapore and from Holland.

A “virtual mike” was then rotated, because the actual microphone was not functioning (unlike those in the adjoining music room), so that Members could provide relevant news and comment, or other pithy observations and insights. A selection of the more relevant are summarized below.

PP Gary Phair
PP Gary advised that he and PP Wes had recently met with representatives from the RC Perth Como, to confirm that they will donate IDR 28 million to RCBND, to be used for Cleft Lip and Palate operations ‘bridging the gap’ (to October 2017) until our Global Grant application can be completed and )hopefully approved. This is an extremely useful donation, for which RCBND is very grateful to all involved.

Visiting Rtn. Pier Virgilio
Rtn Pier Virgilia from Milano, Italy, introduced himself and his fiancée Laura, who are visiting Bali on holiday. Pier initiated the Milano Digital Rotary Club, and gave a brief overview of how the Club operated:

  • The first fully digital Rotary Club, and they use the program Zoom as supporting software to manage the meetings;
  • The 27 members meet online 3 times per month;
  • Members also have counterparts who provide tutoring to help them learn how to use the service;
  • They also have monthly face-to-face meetings.

Welcome Pier and Laura!

Visiting Rtn. Wim Van Rijswyk
Rtn Wim, from RC Zwarte Watersteden, made his first attendance on his current visit to Bali. He reported that his Club was very happy with the performance of the HIV/AIDS baby milk program, and is pleased to be able to continue to support this activity. He looked forward to continuing his friendships in the Club during his stay on Bali.

Visiting Rtn. Wolf Goettel

Rtn Wolf, from RC Queenstown Singapore, presented the best regards of his President and noted that his Club was active in Batam, Jakarta and Bogor, but not yet in Bali.

PDG Al Purwa
PDG Al congratulated the Club for its performance, and advised that the Club had earned some 14,000 Paul Harris Fellowship Recognition Points for distribution to members.

Ms. Hazel Seow, RI Fund Development Specialist, East Asia
President Edward then introduced Ms. Hazel Seeow and accompanying District Rotary senior representatives to the meeting. Hazel is working for the Rotary Foundation as the Fund Development Specialist East Asia, based in Singapore. Hazel gave a comprehensive outline of the major functions performed by the Rotary Foundation, which channels project funding support to activities prepared and promoted by local Rotary Clubs – such as the Global Grants and District Grants that have contributed so much to the activities of RCBND.

Her presentation showed that funds deployed by RI totaled some $270 million in 2015/16, with Polio Plus ($115M), Global grants ($70M) and District grants ($26M) being the major program types. In 2015/16, there were 1165 Global grants approved, at an average value of $60,000.

Hazel’s presentation emphasized the importance of activity sustainability, and ways by which sustainability needed to be built into activity design, from the community up, with strong local support and ownership, assisted by training and the mobilization of local funding where possible.

In closing the meeting, President Edward warmly thanked Hazel and her supporting team for joining the RCBND lunch meeting, and for sharing so much knowledge and expertise with us. He also thanked visiting members from Italy, Holland, Singapore, Seminyak and Denpasar, and the members applauded warmly.

Raffle tickets of IDR 950,000 were sold – The Raffle results showed that the Minutes of the Lunch Meeting of 3rd August were incorrect, but remarkably prescient, because the book donated by PP Karl-Heinz, entitled “A Brief History of Bali”, was in fact raffled on the 24th August, and won by PP Martin Smyth – as previously reported! Ok… Martin (or whoever…) and other past winners owing prizes are reminded not to forget to make their contributions at forthcoming meetings.

No fines were levied today. :-)

President Edward thanked everyone for joining today. The bell was rung and the meeting adjourned at 2:10 p.m
