ANNOUNCEMENTS, REPORTS

Acting SAA Martin Smyth
Acting SAA Martin rang the bell and called the meeting to order at 1.00pm.

President Edward Naus
President Edward welcomed members and visiting Rotarians from Seminyak and Holland. Noting the temporary new venue, the President thanked Rtn Martin Aeschlimann, General Manager of Ayodya Resort for his prompt and welcoming response to Rotary’s last-minute enquiry if he could make a meeting room and lunch available. He also thanked the F&B Manager and staff for their welcome and excellent service.

The microphone was then rotated so that members could provide relevant news and comment, or other pithy observations and insights. A selection of the more relevant are summarized below.

Visiting Rtn. Wim Van Rijswyk
Rtn Wim advised that he looked forward to attending future meetings on his return to Bali in 6 weeks’ time.

PP Martin Smyth
PP Martin referred to the recent and sad passing of John Fawcett, who had made such a major contribution to the treatment of major eye disease in Bali over many years of devotion to the cause. He reminded members that RCBND had worked closely in support of this work in its early years. Rtn Ibu Ari Murti also noted her experience in working with this generous man, and of the significant contribution he made.

PP Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
Treasurer Karl-Heinz provided a brief overview of changes agreed to funding arrangements for the Cleft Lip and Palate’s “bridging” program of operations, intended to maintain the flow of funds to this activity at a time when RCBND are facing some funding shortfalls. These include:

  • The recent donation of Rp 28 mill from RC Como, Perth WA will be used to fund 4 operations, 3 in September and 1 in October;
  • Because the GG application is somewhat delayed, we will allocate $3,000 of our own funds being held to contribute to the GG, to support the bridging program;
  • We will contribute an additional $200 to the Pusbadi program, to support the provision of an additional prosthetic leg.

Rtn Hugh Brown
Secretary Hugh continued with a brief summary of other matters discussed at the Board meeting:

  • A Global Grants Committee was appointed, and this will include Wes Nieman, Karl-Heinz Schmelzer, Risto Posikiparta and Yuki Masaharu;
  • As advised by PDG Al Purwa at the previous Lunch Meeting, RCBND has accumulated over 14,000 TRF points, which can be contributed for Paul Harris Fellowships. Ways by which these might be made available to Members were discussed, and the need was identified for the Board to further discuss possible procedures with Al Purwa, before sharing the proposals with Members. It is hoped that this will be possible within the next 2-3 weeks;
  • After substantial discussions over the past few weeks, it was agreed that RCBND participation in the GEC Golf Tournament being organized by BNGC was unlikely to provide significant revenue for the Club, and we would not therefore participate further.

Visiting Rtn. Gerrit Ten Veen
Visiting Rtn Gerrit, IPP RC Bali Canggu, noted that he would like to move his membership in Rotary from Canggu to Nusa Dua, but that as IPP Canggu he retained some continuing responsibilities. He also referred to an issue caused by Rotary Australia’s blanket suspension of assistance to all Rotary activities in support of orphanages in SE Asia, because of concerns about the legitimacy of some orphanages. He noted that this ban was affecting a current activity in support of an orphanage in Tabanan.

Raffle
No ticket, no laundry… Oops – the tickets were in the box at our home venue at Bali National Golf so no raffle today. :-(

Fines
And no fines either. :-)

There being no other business President Edward thanked everyone for joining today. The bell was rung and the meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m
