ANNOUNCEMENTS, REPORTS

SAA Martin Smyth
SAA Martin rang the bell and called the meeting to order at 1.00pm.

Acting President Eddie Fitzgerald
Vice-President Eddie again chaired the meeting welcoming Members, and visitors from RC Macau, PP Guy Lesquoy and his wife Rtn Vicky.

PP Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
Treasurer Karl was pleased to note that the take-up of available Paul Harris Fellowship recognition points has now risen to 70%, and he urged the few Members who had not yet done so to take advantage of the offer.

Rtn. Masaharu Yukimoto
Rtn Yuki advised those present that he and his friend Rtn. Jerry from RC Seminyak would have lunch with the students from SMKN 1 who would receive scholarships from RC Nusa Dua, in order to get to know them, and to create a connection to assist the future arrangement.

Rtn. Henny Udy Brown
Rtn Henny advised the meeting that she had attended a Charity Fashion Show event hosted by a Fashion Group F-People on Wed 25th. Henny was advised that the group proposed to donate funds from the sale of a promotional scarf to RCBND, but she was not fully certain that this would in fact happen.

Henny also advised that she and Secretary Hugh had visited 4 hotels as possible venues for the 25th Anniversary Event – St Regis, Laguna, Sofitel and Grand Hyatt. Of these, the St Regis would not be suitable because the available venue was too small for the target 250 pax. Other hotels would be visited in the next few days. After the results of this review have been summarized and discussed with the Committee, formal approaches would be made by letter.

PP Wes
Both VP Eddie and PP Wes noted the need to start preparations for the Annual Orphanage Christmas Party as soon as possible, noting that this year it would also be the 25th Anniversary of this wonderful event.

Rtn. Ari Murti
Rtn Ibu Ari Murti advised the meeting that she had come across a young girl who had received assistance from RCBND HIV/AIDS support program, who was both HIV positive and handicapped, in that she has an artificial leg, but that she still is an active Balinese dancer. She suggested that she might be able to perform at either the Christmas Party, the 25th Anniversary Dinner, or both. This possibility should be considered by the relevant Committees.

Rtn. Hugh Brown
Secretary Hugh reminded the meeting of an earlier email calling for Past Presidents of the Club to consider nominating for the position of Nominating Committee Support for the forthcoming election of District Governor for 2018-2019. If anyone would like to put themselves forward as a candidate for this position, please advise the Secretary, who will assist in taking this to the relevant District committees.

Visiting Rtns. Guy and Vicky Lesquoy
Our visiting Rtn from RC Macau, Past President Guy, gave a brief overview of the history of Macau, and the RC Macau, which was extremely interesting. In summary:

  • RC Macau is 70 years old, has 49 members and is proud of their very active Rotoract;
  • The Club used to be included in the District of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, but as Taiwan became very large, with many RCs, RC Macau now finds itself together now in a new District with Hong Kong and Mongolia;
  • Macau is the center of huge development, with many huge casinos, having grown from 4 20 years ago to 23 now;
  • The population of Macau is only 500,000 people, but it has huge flows of tourists averaging just 1.6 days per visit, 83% from mainland China, and mostly for gambling;
  • The RC Macau provides active support for the many economically disadvantaged families living in the midst of luxury casinos.

In return, PP Karl in his role as Community Services Chair gave a brief overview of RC Bali Nusa Dua:

  • RCBND is now in its 25th year;
  • Has been very active in a number of areas relating to health and education;
  • A main theme has been the Cleft Lip and Palate Program (CLAPP), and we have recently successfully completed work supported by a RI Global Grant, which secured some USD81,000 in funding;
  • This program was very successful, and preparations are nearing completion for the submission of an application for a 2nd Global Grant, together with a number of overseas supporting Rotary Clubs. At this stage the 2nd GG will provide some $120,000 in support for a continuation of CLAPP, extending its geographical coverage to the relatively poor islands to the east of Bali;
  • While Bali seems like a tourist paradise, there are many health and poverty issues, and in particular HIV/AIDS is a continuing and rapidly growing problem. RCBND has provided active and effective support to a number of service providers who are combatting this scourge;
  • Other health and education programs are continuing such as providing prothetic limbs to economically disadvantaged children;
  • We actively welcome partnerships with international Rotary Clubs who can provide funding support to such activities.

Vice President Eddie thanked PP Guy and his wife for their excellent fellowship and presentation, and Club Banners were exchanged.

Raffle
Raffle tickets of IDR 500,000 were sold and SAA Martin won (again… – it’s nice to be draw the prize…) a nice bottle of red wine donated by Edward. Martin and other past winners owing prizes are reminded not to forget to make their contributions at forthcoming meetings.

Fines
Fines of IDR 50,000.- were collected for all and sundry offences.

There being no other business President Edward thanked everyone for joining today. The bell was rung and the meeting adjourned at 2:00p.m.
