Visiting Rtn. Mary Benson
Visiting Rtn Mary (above photo) is current President of RC Honolulu Sunrise. Visiting Bali on holiday, she is a close friend of Past President and previous member of RC Bali Nusa Dua Eric Kaler (who, btw, is also Past President of RC Honolulu Sunrise and Designated District Governor 2019-2020) and passed on greetings from Eric. President Mary was very pleased to be able to join the meeting.

Visiting Rtn. Wim Van Rijswijk
Rtn Wim is a frequent visitor from Holland, who has also contributed a great deal to RCBND activities, especially our HIV/AIDS project and it is always nice to welcome him back.

Guest Wolfgang Krebs

PP Risto Pokiparta
PP Risto advised that he had recently dined with some senior Bali Policemen, who advised him that it would be necessary to get a Police Permit for the Gala Dinner – as planned for our 25th Anniversary. Organising committee, please take note!

Rtn. Ari Murti
Repeating her previous advice about the need to register handphones and sim cards, Rtn Ibu Ari suggested that Embassies or Consuls could advise Members about how to properly comply with this requirement.

PP Wes
PP Wes reminded the meeting and explained to new Members that the Annual Orphanage Christmas Party would soon be held at Grand Hyatt Hotel, on a date to be advised. Members are entitled to invite 150 of the 350 children that will join the function. The Club will sponsor all goodie-bags to a possible total of Rp 35 mill, but Members are to pay Rp 100K for goodie bags and provide transport for the children they sponsor. Members are also encouraged to contribute to the overall cost of the activity.

PP Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
PP Karl-Heinz in his role as Treasurer was pleased to note that the take-up of available Paul Harris Fellowship recognition points has now risen to 85%, and he urged the few Members who had not yet done so to take advantage of the offer.

Next, Karl, in his capacity as Chair of the Community Services Committee, Karl gave a brief summary of major activities to date:

    Cleft Lip and Palate Program (CLPP)

  • The Club’s first Global Grant (GG1) for the CLPP expired in March 2017. A second GG is under preparation and is expected to be submitted by the end November. It is expected to be successful, and will likely start by March 2018;
  • The funds expected to be provided under GG2 total around US$130,000, of which around $40,000 will be contributed by the RC Pittsburgh. By contrast, RCBND itself will contribute around $8,700. Several other International Rotary Clubs are participating in the program;
  • Funds are expected to cover some 185 operations;
  • During the period between the end of GG1 and the start of GG2, the Club is committed to funding three operations per month, and in RY 2017-18 this is expected to total some Rp 190 million;
  • The lead service provider will continue to be the NGO Kolewa, with whom we have worked effectively since the start of the program.

    Prosthetic Limbs

  • For this program, RCBND has provided funding support to the NGO Pusbadi, who organize the provision and fitting of artificial limbs for children and young people in need in Bali;
  • A total of US$2,400 has been provided, but RCBND has applied for a District Grant, which if it is successful will provide additional funds of some $2,600 for the program.

    HIV/AIDS program

  • RCBND is continuing a long-term engagement to provide support for mothers and children affected with HIV/AIDS, including testing, nutritional supplements and school tuition.

Secretary Hugh Brown
Secretary Hugh was asked to provide a summary of the earlier Board Meeting. He reported that the major matters discussed included:

  • Status of Global Grant 2 preparation (separately noted above), which is nearing completion;

  • A commitment to provide continuing scholarships for SMKN 1 students receiving them this year, for the following year (2018-19), subject to funding availability and Board approval;

  • PHF Recognition points – 85% of the points available have been taken up, which will raise in excess of Rp 80 million;

  • Noted that preparations for the 25th Anniversary Gala Dinner, to be held on 3rd February, were underway;

  • The new District Governor will visit the Club on 23rd November.

With news and views out of the way, it was time for SAA Martin to take the floor.
