Mrs. Talitha Karat

SAA Martin Smyth
SAA Martin rang the bell calling the Meeting to order at 1.00pm.

President Edward Naus
President Edward welcomed Members, and welcomed back our frequent visitor Sally Bellmaine from RC Seminyak, and visitor Fenny, a friend of Rtn Wes and Sylvie. In particular, he welcomed our guest Thomas Karat and his wife Talitha, visiting from Amsterdam, who will talk about Emotional Intelligence and Non-Verbal Communication.

PP Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
PP Karl-Heinz was pleased to report his healthy return from a 10 day tour of Africa and Europe, visiting 4 countries in 10 days, and only once sleeping in the same bed for two nights.

Rtn. Hugh Brown
The meeting was then advised of the decision taken at a meeting of the Organizing Committee for the 25th Anniversary event on Wed 24th, that it had been decided to postpone the event until later in April, to the preferred date 21st April. The reasons for this included:

A low level of ticket sales, including by Members, with only around 100 guests likely to be possible low sales to the public reflected the current difficult conditions – depressed Bali economy; the post-Christmas/New Year period; very bad weather; Very limited available time to actively market and promote the event.

As a result of likely very low attendance, it would not be possible to extract the proper value from the excellent array of prizes that had been donated. It was felt that postponing the event would provide more time for a higher-quality and intensity marketing and promotional campaign, a higher number of ticket sales, and significantly higher revenue from the raffles and auction program.

Rtn Thomas S. Karat

Professionally Thomas (above photo, left) is a manager for Verizon (telecom). His teams of more than 30 people manage B2B data traffic for mostly fortune 500 multinational companies. For more detailed information feel free to have a look at his LinkedIn profile (Thomas.S.Karat) The subject of today’s presentation was How to utilize Emotional Intelligence and Nonverbal Communication for Deception Detection in formal and informal settings.

As this is a broad topic to cover and given the usually limited time available for the presentation within the framework of a lunch meeting I will focus on an observation made by Darwin that was confirmed by modern science, the inhibition theory. That is to say that there are reliable muscle configurations in our face that operate outside of our volition so that they can be used as indicators for deception detection.

An excellent presentation of an extremely interesting topic, focusing attention on the way primates – and humans – communicate by body language, facial and positional communications strategies.

Your Secretary was too interested in the presentation to take notes or present a mini-thesis, and you are advised to Google the subjects for further information! (I did this to see if it is good advice, and indeed it is – lots of interesting material!).

A fabulous presentation that went well past the lunch hour (and alas no time for a Raffle or fines).

No raffle.

No fines today.

There being no other business President Edward thanked everyone for joining today. The bell was rung and the meeting adjourned at 2:25p.m.
