Visiting Rotarians and Rotaract Members

SAA Martin Smyth
PP and today’s SAA Martin rang the bell calling the Meeting to order a at 1.00pm.

President Hugh Brown
President Hugh welcomed members to his first meeting of Rotary Year 2018-2019.

President Hugh emphasised that he he is not ‘new’ but rather continuing the office of president. President Hugh stated that reminded everyone that the president is not the club, the members are the club and stated that he had sent an email with an outline of his vision for the club this year and requested every member to read. In general, the club always needs to evolve with the times and to meet members’ needs.

President Hugh went on to thank IPP Edward for his leadership and personal help during the past Rotary Year.

President Hugh then reported that the club did not receive a RI Presidential Citation for Rotary Year 2017-2018 because of a technicality when terminating two dear members who are unable to continue their membership due to health reasons. These members were terminated on 01 July Indonesian time (30 June USA time) and doing so invalidated one of the basic membership requirements. Had the terminations been processed on 01 July USA time the club would have received the citation. Kasihan… :-(

On a brighter note, President Hugh announced that Rtn. Gerrit had happily agreed to assume the role of Club Services Chair. Thanks Gerrit…

The roving “Metaphorical Mike” was then circulated for news, views and camaraderie.

IPP Edward Naus
IPP Edward thanked members for their support last year and encouraged everyone to get behind and support President Hugh.

Rtn. Brian Booker
Brian remarked that he had read Hugh’s email, it was very interesting and as a new member learned quite a bit about the club and the Rotaract club.

Rtn. Gerrit Ven Teen
Gerrit said he was eager to takeover Club Services – but after the World Cup is finished. Lot of good football to watch.

Rtn. Christine Velde
Christine mentioned that she would be willing to write an article of two for the Bali Advertiser – perhaps a promotion for our Golf Tournament and a feature article about our new Global Grant Project.

PP Martin Smyth
PP Martin again reminded everyone that our club’s Annual Handover Dinner Party has been scheduled for next week, Friday 20, July at the Ayodya Bali Resort. Dress Code is Orange and Black; Orange for Edward and the Netherlands and Black for Hugh and New Zealand.

Invitations are out, please RSVP by 17 July.

PP Wes
PP Wes questioned what was ‘Plan B’ in the event of inclement weather. Currently extremely windy on the eastern shore at night and he could envision some attendees being uncomfortable or deciding not to attend.

    >> Martin and Edward will review.

Note: In lieu of the Handover Dinner Party on Friday 20 July, there will be no Weekly Lunch Meeting on Thursday 19 July.

President Hugh
During lunch President Hugh initiated discussion about the need to revitalise the level of club activity this year especially as it relates to weekly meetings and growing membership. Fwiw, the District is, on balance facing the same issues.

A wide ranging discussion ensued generating the following observations and comments.

  • Review the meeting atmosphere, more structured, start with RI promotional video.
  • Strengthen relationships with other clubs.
  • Review and address needs of Rotaract Club, strengthen ties / personal relationships with Rotaractors to rebuild the club while recognising age difference of the two clubs.
  • Target younger people, especially Indonesian Nationals, in the community for membership.
  • Prepare materials to present to potential new members.
  • Draw up list of businesses, social and expat organisations to approach. Should quickly approach Nusa Dua area hotel GM’s as well as senior level management.
  • Consider thoughts on different time or venue.
  • Members need to get involved with current projects or develop a new project/area of interest.
  • Demographics of Bali and Nusa Dua have changed since the Club was Chartered in 1992. There are now more community organisations as well as social clubs competing for everyone’s free time, traffic conditions making more difficult to come to Nusa Dua.
  • Rotaract has generally been a club focused on developing University students (temporary membership) and once graduated and working have less time or relocate out of the area.

To be continued…

PP Martin Smyth
With discussion over and a very enjoyable meal finished, PP and SAA Martin took the floor.

Raffle tickets of IDR 400,000 were sold and a beautiful necklace with matching earrings, donated by Rtn. Debra, were won by Rtn. Brian. Congratulations Brian! Brian and other past winners owing prizes were reminded not to forget to make their contributions at forthcoming meetings.

Taking a rest after last week’s marathon fining session… Martin found no cause for fines today
