Visiting Rotarians and Rotaract Members

Mr. Keith Bell, guest of PP Wes

SAA Edward Naus
PP and SAA Edward rang the bell calling the Meeting to order a at 1.00pm.

President Hugh Brown
President Hugh gave a warm welcome to everyone able to attend today especially our special guest and former RCB Nusa Doer, Keith Bell visiting from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Welcome Keith! :-)

President Hugh continued by stating that this past week has bee very, very busy with Rotarians working around the clock to help victims of two powerful earthquakes, including a 7.0 on Sunday night, on neighbouring Lombok.

Lastest news has reported that some 350 people had lost their lives, 1,000s injured and 10 of 1,000s of homes destroyed.

Today Rotary Clubs of Bali are sending 12 tons of food by truck.

President Hugh stated that RCBND is donating IDR 5 juta for initial relief but that is ‘small beer’ when considering the scope of devastation visited upon the island. So… Rotarians are asked if they know of other Rotarians around the world to ask for further donations. We will gather them in one account and send from the club.

President Hugh also reported that he, PP Karl and PP Wes and friend David Kuper visited the Bali Blood bank on Tuesday morning together with select members of RC Bali Kuta to investigate opportunities for a project with District 5000 (Hawaii).

Lastly President Hugh announced the resignation of Rtns. Christine and David. In addition to Christine undergoing planned knee replacement surgery they have received terribly sad news that a grandchild is very ill and they will stay on to help as needed. President Hugh thanked Christine and David for all their help – especially public relations – during their tenure with us.

With that President Hugh passed the ‘microphone’ for news and views.

PP Wes
PP Wes relayed apologies from Rtn. Gerrit who is a bit under the weather and unable to attend today. Nonetheless Gerrit did send an email with updates for coming meetings.

Next week, 16 August, Prof.Dr.Takeshi Takama, the founder and CEO of SuRe.Co (Research and Consultation on Sustainability and Climate Change) will be our Guest Speaker.

PP Wes noted that Gerrit was working very hard to bring interesting speakers and we now have enough speakers for every other week through December.

Additionally Gerrit has set up our next fellowship dinner at Garasi Restaurant on either 23 or 24 August. Consensus favoured Thursday 23 August. PP Wes will advise Gerrit to make final arrangements.

PP Edward Naus
PP and SAA Edward reported that since the Guest Speaker won the Raffle last week and didn’t return with a prize there prize cupboard was bare and asked members to donate prizes next week.

With regard to assistance to Lombok PP Edward put forward that we as a club are not prepared to be first responders and should perhaps save funds for more long term assistance / projects.

PP Risto Poskiparta
PP Risto agreed with PP Edward that after the first responders leave or are needed elsewhere we should be prepared to help. Furthermore at the current moment roads are heavily damaged.

At that point, a strong earthquake was felt (6.2 on Lombok). About half those present hurried outside, others remained seated.

Rtn. Ari Murti
Ari then asked what was the proper course of action in such an earthquake.

Guest Keith Bell
As a (now retired) manager of several hotels whether to stay or go can depend on the building itself.

After a brief discussion no definitive conclusion was reached wth some believing staying put and getting under the table if needed better than leaving the building in a panic and perhaps being injured from falling debris. Others felt it better to leave than take the chance of building collapse. Hopefully we will not need to discuss again anytime soon.

PP Karl-Heinz Schmelzer
PP Karl-Heinz, this year’s club Treasurer reported that only two currently active members have yet to pay their dues.

Karl said that he would approach our major donor in Global Grant program to join our project in the Bali Blood Bank project with District 5000.

Karl announced that the former Nusa Dua branch manager is now a Regional Vice President!

Furthermore Bank Mandiri will help with our Annual Golf Tournament donating IDR 500,000. forever IDR Milyar on deposit with the bank. Can include members and their spouses in this calculation – therefore if you would like to help the club receive more sponsorship funds from Bank Mandiri please give your account number to PP Karl. The bank will check anonymously and just add up the amounts on deposit.

PP Karl also noted this can also be done to offset the cost of a custom label e-money card.

Finally wrt HIV/AIDS project we will pay the scholarships for 37 children this Saturday.

No Raffle today (see PP Edward’s remarks above).

Also another fine Thursday afternoon with no Fines… ;-)

There being no other business President Hugh thanked everyone for joining today. The bell was rung and the meeting promptly adjourned at 2:00p.m.
