Dear Rotarians,

Together with DG Ritje Rihatinah and PDG Osman Aman, we had the chance to visit few of the affected areas in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) by land transportation. Areas which we visited were Krueng Mane, North Aceh, East Aceh and Banda Aceh all of which were damaged because Tsunami was so large.

The trip was interesting and not frightening as many have described. Although the trip was only for 2 days and 2 nights, we received many useful inputs for Rotarians - especially for future long-term programs.

Here I only report relief efforts from District Rotary 3400 for victims in North Sumatera and NAD. On Dec 31, 2004 District Rotary 3400 has sent 1 truck of relief supplies consisting of :
5 tons rice
265 boxes instant noodles
56 boxes clothing
15 boxes mineral water
15 boxes of mineral water
41 boxes biscuits

To Krueng Mane and Pidie.
In these two areas Kasrem Lilawangsa reported that there were 4521 people killed, 365 lost and 306 injured.

Other:
We also sent relief supplies from Mr.Kahoro Hirata, a friend from AG Mahyuzar Nasution (1 shipment) consisting of:
2 tons rice
2 tons sugar
100 units - stoves for cooking
1000 cup instant noodle :
500 boxes of Dancow powdered milk
300 liter carbolic
100 unit masks - export quality
100 pairs hand gloves - export quality:
100 raincoats
100 pairs boots/shoe
500 boxes Marie Regal biscuits

Also Posko Klinik Rotary Deli Medan on Jalan Wahidin, Medan has received some relief from the community on Jalan Tapanuli as follows:
14 sacks of rice total 30 kg
220 boxes of cup mineral water
220 boxes of mineral water (600 ml)
126 boxes of instant noodles
8 sacks of rice totaling 15kg each
20 boxes of cloths

All the above relief supplies were sent to NAD by 2 shipments - on Dec 31 and 2004 and Jan 3, 2005. To help victims with medical emergencies, District 3400 has worked together with (USU) Universitas Sumatra Utara to open medical check counter and provide ambulance for the evacuations who located at camp Lho'Seumawe and to give them 5000 pieces hand gloves and masks.

Furthermore on Dec 28, 2004 until Jan 2, 2005 Rotary Volunteers Johnny and Dr. Hartono visited Nias and gave medical relief supplies and medicine to survivors. (NB. There were 227 people listed killed on this island.)

Total people evacuated from Sirombu village are 1,201 and another 300 people from Mandrehe village. Total patients who helped by Rotarian Doctors were about 400 people.

Infectious diseases that commonly follow are: 20% of ISPA , hypertension 5%, diarrhea 5%, dyspepsia 20%, TBC 10%, malaria 10%, rheumatic 5%, 25 % for eyes, ear, skin infected, injured and others. Concerning this opportunity, Rotarians are working together with the Catholic Church at Gunung Sitoli.

Along with 7 tons of rice and 19 boxes of medicines, Rotarians have sent relief supplies to Nias consisting of:
50 boxes of mineral water.
