Rotary Responds to the Tragic Tsunami
that hit North Sumatra 26 December 2004 |

Dear
Rotarians,
Together with DG Ritje Rihatinah and PDG Osman Aman, we had
the chance to visit few of the affected areas in Nangroe Aceh
Darussalam (NAD) by land transportation. Areas which we visited
were Krueng Mane, North Aceh, East Aceh and Banda Aceh all of
which were damaged because Tsunami was so large.
The trip was interesting and not frightening as many have described.
Although the trip was only for 2 days and 2 nights, we received
many useful inputs for Rotarians - especially for future long-term
programs.
Here
I only report relief efforts from District Rotary 3400 for victims
in North Sumatera and NAD. On
Dec 31, 2004 District Rotary 3400 has sent 1 truck of relief
supplies consisting of :

tons rice
265 boxes instant noodles
56 boxes clothing
15 boxes mineral water
15 boxes of mineral water
41 boxes biscuits
To
Krueng Mane and Pidie.
In these two areas Kasrem Lilawangsa reported that there were
4521 people killed, 365 lost and 306 injured.
Other:
We also sent relief supplies from Mr.Kahoro Hirata, a friend
from AG Mahyuzar Nasution (1 shipment) consisting of:

2 tons sugar
100 units - stoves for cooking
1000 cup instant noodle :
500 boxes of Dancow powdered milk
300 liter carbolic
100 unit masks - export quality
100 pairs hand gloves - export quality:
100 raincoats
100 pairs boots/shoe
500 boxes Marie Regal biscuits
Also
Posko Klinik Rotary Deli Medan on Jalan Wahidin, Medan has received
some relief from the community on Jalan Tapanuli as follows:

sacks of rice total 30 kg
220 boxes of cup mineral water
220 boxes of mineral water (600 ml)
126 boxes of instant noodles
8 sacks of rice totaling 15kg each
20 boxes of cloths
All
the above relief supplies were sent to NAD by 2 shipments -
on Dec 31 and 2004 and Jan 3, 2005. To
help victims with medical emergencies, District 3400 has worked
together with (USU) Universitas Sumatra Utara to open medical
check counter and provide ambulance for the evacuations who
located at camp Lho'Seumawe and to give them 5000 pieces hand
gloves and masks.
Furthermore
on Dec 28, 2004 until Jan 2, 2005 Rotary Volunteers Johnny and
Dr. Hartono visited Nias and gave medical relief supplies and
medicine to survivors. (NB. There were 227 people listed killed
on this island.)
Total people evacuated from Sirombu village are 1,201 and another
300 people from Mandrehe village. Total patients who helped
by Rotarian Doctors were about 400 people.
Infectious
diseases that commonly follow are: 20% of ISPA , hypertension
5%, diarrhea 5%, dyspepsia 20%, TBC 10%, malaria 10%, rheumatic
5%, 25 % for eyes, ear, skin infected, injured and others. Concerning
this opportunity, Rotarians are working together with the Catholic
Church at Gunung Sitoli.
Along with 7 tons of rice and 19 boxes of medicines, Rotarians
have sent relief supplies to Nias consisting of:
50
boxes of mineral water.
45 boxes of cloths.
200 boxes of instant noodles.
14 boxes of biscuits.
