SLB-B
(The Deaf School)
Nusa Dua Bali |
| |
School
Overview:
One of only 3 public schools in Indonesia to accept children
who are hearing impaired, SLB-B (Sekolah Luar Biasa -
Bali or School for Extra Ordinary Children - Bali) was
begun by the Indonesian Government in 1984.
Since the Asian economic crises began in 1997, the school
has faced an increasingly chronic shortage of funds to
continue its basic mandate. The school has on its own
tried to bridge the gap itself by soliciting donations
from private individuals and organizations as well as
the students making and selling simple handicrafts - but
continues to fall short.
The school covers grades kindergarten through senior high
school and children range in age from 4 years up to 20
years. Currently has 120 students of which 54 are housed
at the school and who do not receive any financial support
from their parents.

Silence
is Not a Barrier (October
2000 - June 2001)
The primary objective of this program is to give the children
(and their parents) a reason to stay in school - by giving
them exposure to employment opportunities that do not
require much verbal communication (ie - floral arranging,
garde mange (cold food preparation) in hotel kitchen,
computer graphics and so on. For more info - please
